What a Footing Does
A footing is the wide strip of concrete at the bottom of a foundation. It sits in a trench below the wall and spreads the weight of the house into the soil, so the walls above have a solid, level base.
Basement walls, crawl space walls and retaining walls all start at a footing. If the footing is off in line or elevation, every wall and every floor built above it carries that error.
On a sloped lot, the footing also sets the shape of the foundation. It can drop in steps down the hill, with deeper sections where the grade falls away, and each step becomes the starting point for a taller or shorter wall above it.
Equipment and Site Conditions
JJC Concrete keeps excavators, bobcats and lasers on hand alongside its aluminum forms. Access matters on any footing job, especially on a slope or where the site is tight between trees, neighbors or a steep drive.
Tell us about site conditions when you send the plans, such as the grade, where equipment can get in and anything that has to stay put. Say who is handling the dig as well, since those details shape where equipment can work.

Setting Elevations With Lasers
Footing work is layout work. Lasers are the tool for setting the elevations for the bottom of the trench and the top of the footing, and those elevations come from the plans.
A footing that matches the drawings lets the wall crew, the framers and everyone after them work from the same numbers.
Where a garage floor, porch or stoop meets the house, the elevations in the plans tie those pieces together too, so the footing is the first place those numbers show up on site.
Footings and Walls From One Crew
Our main work is poured basement and foundation walls for builders and general contractors, and those walls sit on footings. Footings and walls can be bid together, so one bid covers the base and the walls that stand on it, and those walls go up in aluminum forms that leave a smooth finish.
See our basement walls, poured foundation walls and crawl space foundations for the walls that go on top, and retaining walls for the lot around the house.

Inspections Happen Before the Pour
Inspection steps come from the jurisdiction, and published processes from a few Georgia jurisdictions show how they can look. Oconee County's published process, for example, describes the footing inspection as made after trenches are excavated or formed and the steel is in place, before concrete is placed.
Fulton County's residential inspection process, dated 2017, lists the footing and foundation inspection as step 4, and asks builders to flag property corners and setback lines before it. Within five feet of a setback, it calls for a footing survey sealed by a registered land surveyor. The City of Atlanta's policy on residential concrete inspections gives the city up to 2 business days to inspect before the pour, and allows approved third party inspectors instead. If your job is in another city or county, including South Fulton, check that jurisdiction's own process.
Footing Size, Steel and Permits Follow the Plans
Footing width, depth and reinforcing come from the designer and from the residential code your jurisdiction enforces. In Georgia, the state minimum standard for one and two family dwellings is the International Residential Code with Georgia Amendments, adopted by the Department of Community Affairs.
Soil conditions and the loads the house puts on its foundation both feed into those numbers, which is why the drawings govern. Footings are bid from the sizes and steel shown on your plans.
Permit and inspection rules belong to the city or county where the house is going up, and the steps above show that they differ from one jurisdiction to the next. Your permit and your building department are the authority on what applies to your lot.
Build the inspection into your schedule before the concrete is ordered, and ask about permits for your project when you call us to talk through the bid.

How a Footing Bid Works
- 1
Send the plans
Share the foundation plan with footing sizes, steel and elevations, plus the site plan or lot address.
- 2
Scope the footing work
Linear feet of footing, sizes and elevations, the grade and site access all shape the bid.
- 3
Receive the bid
The bid covers the footing work as drawn. Permit and inspection questions go to the building department on your permit.
- 4
Trenches and steel
With the trenches dug to the plans, lasers set the elevations and the steel goes in as the plans show, with any required inspection before the pour.
- 5
Pour the footings
Concrete is placed in the trenches or forms, giving the foundation walls a level base to go up on.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I send to get a bid on footings?
Send the foundation plan with footing sizes, steel and elevations, the site plan or lot address, and whether you also need the walls poured. If you only have a house plan and a lot so far, send those and tell us about the grade and access.
How much do concrete footings cost?
The price depends on the linear feet of footing, the size and steel in the plans, the grade of the lot and site access. Each job is bid from its own drawings, so send the plans and request a bid, or call to talk it through.
Does the footing need an inspection before the pour?
Where your city or county requires it, yes. Published processes from Oconee County and Fulton County place the footing inspection before concrete is poured. Check with the building department on your permit for its exact steps and timing, and build that into your schedule.
Do you pull permits?
Permit requirements are set by the city or county where the house is built, and each one publishes its own process. Ask about permits for your project when you call, and confirm with your local building department what it requires before the footings are dug.
Do you pour the walls on top of the footings too?
Yes. Poured basement and foundation walls are our main work, along with crawl space foundations and subwalls. All of our walls go up in aluminum forms that give a smooth finish, and we have poured walls as tall as 24 feet on past jobs.
How long have you been in business, and do you speak Spanish?
JJC Concrete started in 2010 and has been pouring walls ever since. It is a family owned company based in Marietta, with family members on the crew. Hablamos español, so plans, bids and job questions can be handled in Spanish or English, whichever is easier for your crew.
