What Does Concrete Removal and Replacement Include?

Replacement is a full redo of a section of concrete rather than a patch on top of it. The old concrete is broken up, loaded out and hauled off, the ground underneath is prepared again, and new concrete is formed, poured and finished.

We have excavators and bobcats on hand, which is the kind of equipment breaking out and loading old slabs calls for.

  • Driveways, including tear out and haul off of the old concrete
  • Front walks, side paths and sidewalk sections
  • Patios and back slabs
  • Steps and stoops
  • Garage floors and other slabs

Should a Cracked Slab Be Repaired or Replaced?

It depends on what kind of damage the slab has, and a crack alone does not answer the question. Concrete shrinks as it dries, and some cracking is part of how it behaves. Whether a particular slab can be repaired or needs to come out is a judgment about that slab, made by looking at it.

The U.S. General Services Administration publishes a guide to crack types that is a useful starting point. It describes crazing, the fine web of surface cracks, as limited to the surface and generally not a serious structural problem. It describes scaling and pop outs as surface issues too. Damage like that can be cosmetic, even when it looks rough.

What Signs Point Toward Replacing Concrete?

Some kinds of damage point past the surface. None of these is a diagnosis on its own, but each is worth describing when you ask about your slab.

  • Offset cracks, where one side of the crack sits higher than the other. GSA links offset cracking to uneven settlement of the ground underneath or pressure from below.
  • Sections that have sunk or tipped, so water pools on them or runs toward the house
  • Spalling deep enough to expose rusting steel. GSA notes corrosion in that situation is likely to accelerate.
  • A slab broken into many loose pieces that move when you step on them
  • Walks and steps that have pulled away from the house or dropped below the next surface, creating a trip edge

Why Does the Ground Under the Slab Matter?

When concrete has sunk or cracked with an offset, the ground below is part of the story. Pouring new concrete over the same soft or washed out base can bring the same problem back, which is why replacement includes preparing the base again rather than only swapping the top layer.

Drainage is part of that too. As general industry guidance, the American Concrete Institute guide ACI 302.1R recommends a two percent slope for positive drainage on exterior slabs, so a replacement slab can be graded to shed water away from the house even if the old one did not.

Can You Replace Just Part of a Driveway or Walk?

Sometimes. A single broken panel between control joints can be cut out and poured again, while damage that runs across the whole slab points toward a full replacement. A new section can look different in color from older concrete next to it, and that is worth weighing when you decide how much to redo.

For a full driveway redo, our concrete driveway service covers the tear out, grading and new pour. For a front path, see sidewalks and walkways.

What Can Change When Old Concrete Comes Out?

Replacing concrete is a chance to fix the layout as well as the surface. Once the old slab is gone, the new one does not have to follow its outline, so it is worth thinking about what bothered you about the old one besides the cracks.

Bring those ideas up when you describe the job, since a change in size or shape affects the forming, the grading and the amount of base work.

  • A wider driveway or an added parking pad beside it
  • A walk rerouted to follow the path people actually take
  • A larger patio or back slab than the one being removed
  • A stoop sized for the door it serves, with steps that meet the walk
  • A new grade that sends water away from the house instead of toward it

How a Removal and Replacement Job Works

  1. 1

    Describe the damage

Tell us what the concrete is, about how big it is, and what you see: cracks, sinking, pooling water, broken edges or loose pieces.

  2. 2

    Break out and haul off

The old concrete is broken up, loaded with equipment and hauled off the property.

  3. 3

    Base and grade

The ground underneath is prepared again and graded so the new slab can shed water.

  4. 4

    Form, pour and finish

Forms are set, the new concrete is poured and finished, and control joints are placed for the size of the slab.

  5. 5

    Cure

New concrete needs time before foot and vehicle traffic, and how long depends on the mix and the weather, so ask about timing for your job.

Do you tear out and replace old concrete in Marietta?

Yes. JJC Concrete removes old concrete, hauls it off and pours new concrete for homeowners in Marietta and nearby towns in Cobb County and metro Atlanta. That includes driveways, walkways, patios, steps, garage floors and other slabs that have cracked, sunk or broken apart.

Do you haul away the old concrete?

Yes. Removal and replacement covers breaking out the old concrete and hauling it off the property, along with preparing the base and pouring the new slab. Driveway work in particular includes tear out and haul off of the old concrete. Ask about your specific job when you call.

Does every crack mean I need new concrete?

No. Concrete shrinks as it dries, and some cracks are surface only. The GSA describes crazing and scaling as surface issues. Offset cracks, sunken sections, exposed rusting steel and loose broken pieces are signs worth describing to us when you ask about your slab.

How much does concrete replacement cost?

It varies from one job to the next. The size of the area, the thickness of the old concrete, access for equipment, how much base work the ground needs and what goes back in all change the scope. Call or use the estimate form to describe the job and ask for a free estimate.

Do I need a permit to replace my driveway?

Permit requirements are set by the city or county, and they can differ for work where a driveway meets the street. Ask about permits for your specific project when you call, and check with your city or county building department for the rules that apply to your property.
