Concrete Work in the Jonquil City
Smyrna was incorporated in 1872 and calls itself the Jonquil City. Its downtown centers on Market Village, which the city describes as its social center, set beside the Village Green and the Smyrna Public Library.
The city notes that bricks now called Smyrna brick line the walkways and pedestrian avenues of the rebuilt downtown. A walk at home carries daily foot traffic too, and a poured walk from the drive to the front door is one of the residential jobs we do here.
The 2020 census counted 55,663 people in Smyrna, and the Census Bureau estimated 57,513 by mid 2025. The Census owner occupied housing rate for Smyrna over 2020 to 2024 was 59.4 percent.
What Smyrna's Building Division Lists for Permits
The City of Smyrna Building Division, part of its Community Development Department, publishes a list of residential work that needs a permit. Retaining walls are on that list, along with land disturbance, new homes, building additions, structural demolition and accessory structures larger than 200 square feet or taller than one story.
The city's advice for anything unclear is to check its online permitting portal or call the Building Division. We found no separate driveway rule on the pages we reviewed, so treat that as a question for the city rather than an answer. Permit requirements are set by the city, and we suggest you bring up permits for your project when you call us.

Right of Way and Easements at the Street
Smyrna Public Works explains that rights of way are generally adjacent to streets and generally used for utilities, and that maintaining them, grass cutting included, is generally the adjacent owner's job. A driveway that runs out to the curb reaches into that strip, so it is worth asking the city what applies before the old apron comes out.
The same Public Works guidance says a property owner owns the land inside an easement, while the city keeps the right to repair, replace, inspect or maintain the utility within it. If a new patio, walk or slab would sit over an easement, that is a conversation to have with the city early.
Piedmont Red Clay and Runoff in Cobb County
Smyrna is in Cobb County, which the National Park Service places in the Piedmont physiographic province. The Pacolet soil series, described by USDA soil scientists, is a Piedmont soil with a red clay subsoil, slopes that range from 2 to 60 percent, and medium to rapid runoff from its surface.
Georgia's red clay is weathered rock called saprolite, and the New Georgia Encyclopedia notes that it erodes easily once trees and plants are removed. For a homeowner, that is a good reason to plan how rain leaves a new patio or driveway, and to think about a retaining wall where a yard drops away. Where a front walk has to climb a bank, a short run of poured steps can take the place of a steep slope of concrete.
The ground under a specific Smyrna lot is something to describe when you call. The exact design belongs to each job, and grade and drainage are good topics to raise when you ask for an estimate.

Residential Concrete Services in Smyrna
When an old driveway or walk has cracked, settled or heaved, removal and replacement covers breaking out the old concrete, hauling it away and pouring new concrete to the grade the site needs. For a first conversation, the size of the area, what is there now and how a truck reaches it are the useful details.
Here is the homeowner work we pour, with links to the details for each:
- Driveways, with tear out and haul off of the old concrete
- Walkways and sidewalks from the drive to the door or around the side of the house
- Steps and stoops at the front porch or back door
- Patios and garage slabs
- Removal and replacement of broken or sunken sections
Poured Walls for Builders and Contractors in Smyrna
Our main work is poured walls for builders and general contractors across metro Atlanta. In Smyrna that includes footings, basement walls, poured foundation walls, crawl space foundations, subwalls and retaining walls.
We form walls with aluminum forms, which give a smooth finish, and we have poured walls as tall as 24 feet. Our equipment on hand includes lasers, excavators and bobcats, and GCs can send plans through the bid request. The full list of wall types is on our commercial page.
On a lot where the ground falls away, one side of a basement holds back more earth than the other. Builders working a sloped Smyrna lot can send the wall heights for each side along with the plans, and fold footings, subwalls and any retaining walls into the same bid.
Smyrna's Roads and Neighbors
Interstate 285, Cobb Parkway, Atlanta Road and South Cobb Drive all run through Smyrna. The city is bordered by Vinings, by Marietta on the north and west, and by Mableton on the south and southwest.
Projects near those lines are covered on our Marietta and Mableton pages. Se habla español, so Spanish speaking homeowners in Smyrna can plan a job in their own language.

Frequently Asked Questions
What does a driveway or basement wall cost in Smyrna?
It depends on the job, so we give each Smyrna project its own number instead of a published price. Size, slope, access and any concrete that has to come out all factor in. Homeowners can ask for a free estimate, and builders can request a bid with plans.
Does JJC Concrete pour walls, or only flatwork?
Both. Poured walls are our main line of work: basement walls, foundation walls, crawl space foundations, subwalls and retaining walls, formed with aluminum forms for a smooth face. We also pour driveways, patios, slabs, walkways and steps for Smyrna homeowners and want more of that residential work.
Are you licensed and insured for work in Smyrna?
JJC Concrete is licensed and insured, and we are a family owned company that has been pouring walls since 2010. If your Smyrna project or your builder has questions about insurance, bring them up when you reach out about an estimate or bid.
Do I need a permit for a retaining wall in Smyrna?
The City of Smyrna Building Division lists retaining walls among the residential projects that need a permit. The city sets those rules, not us, so check its permitting portal or call the Building Division, and ask us about permits for your wall when you call.
Which Cobb County cities do you work in near Smyrna?
Our work is mostly across metro Atlanta. In Cobb County that includes Smyrna, Marietta, Kennesaw, Acworth, Powder Springs, Austell, Mableton and the East Cobb area. We also have pages for towns beyond Cobb, from Woodstock to McDonough. Ask about your address when you call.
Can I talk to someone in Spanish?
Sí, se habla español. Spanish service is available for Smyrna homeowners, builders and crews, whether the job is a new driveway or a set of foundation walls. Our hours are Monday to Friday, 8 AM to 6 PM, so reach out during those hours in whichever language suits you.
