Poured Concrete Retaining Walls in Metro Atlanta
JJC Concrete pours concrete retaining walls for builders, general contractors and homeowners on sloped lots across metro Atlanta. We have been pouring walls since 2010, and every wall goes up in aluminum forms that leave a smooth finish. Send your plans or a description of the grade and request a bid.

Why Pour a Retaining Wall in Place?
A poured retaining wall is one continuous piece of concrete tied to its footing, with the steel set inside the forms before the pour. On a lot where the grade drops away behind a house, a driveway or a parking area, the wall, its footing and its steel work together to hold the soil as the design intends.
Poured walls also follow the layout the engineer or designer drew. Corners, steps in the top of the wall and changes in height shown on the drawings are set in the forms before the concrete goes in.
For a homeowner, a retaining wall can turn a slope nobody can use into a flat yard, a wider driveway or room for a patio. For a builder, it can be what makes a lot buildable, with a wall that sits on its own footing and follows the plan the jurisdiction reviewed.
Aluminum Forms and a Smooth Wall Face
JJC Concrete pours with aluminum forms, not lumber. The metal panels hold their shape pour after pour, and they give the wall a smooth face that looks finished the day the forms come off.
That matters on a retaining wall because the face can be in plain view, along a driveway, beside a patio or across the back of a lot. A clean surface also makes it simpler for whoever handles waterproofing, coatings or veneer to do their part.
The same aluminum forms go up on our basement and foundation wall jobs, so a retaining wall poured next to a new house can carry the same smooth finish as the walls under it.
Wall work on past jobs

Equipment for Sloped and Tight Sites
Excavators, bobcats and lasers are part of the equipment JJC Concrete keeps on hand. Lasers are the tool for setting the footing and top of wall elevations from the plans.
Across its wall work, our crew has poured walls as tall as 24 feet on past jobs. The height of any retaining wall on your project is set by the design, the site and the approvals your jurisdiction issues, and that is what we bid to.
Tell us early about limited access, a steep drive, trees that must stay or a neighbor's fence near the line, and who is handling the dig. Those details shape where equipment and concrete trucks can work.
Permits, Engineering and Local Thresholds
Retaining wall rules come from the city or county, and they are not the same everywhere. Two published examples show the range. The City of Acworth's residential retaining wall form says walls over 4 feet at any point need a permit, and that walls supporting structures need a stamped, sealed design by a Georgia Registered Structural Engineer. It also calls for an engineer's design where the backfill slope is steeper than 1 in 3.
DeKalb County's checklist, a second example, requires a permit for walls 4 feet or more measured from the bottom of the footing to the top of the wall, and for walls holding a surcharge load of any height. Both documents call for engineered drawings in some cases, so ask your own building department what applies to your lot and ask us about permits when you call.

Inspections Before the Pour
Inspection steps are set by the jurisdiction that issues the permit. In Acworth, for example, the form states that inspection of a permitted retaining wall happens before any concrete, backfill or drainage material is placed, in progressive stages as the wall goes up.
Plan your sequence around whatever inspections your permit lists, and ask your building department what has to stay open for each one.
Drainage and Backfill Are Part of the Design
Water behind a wall adds load, so drainage belongs in the plan, not as an afterthought. The engineer or the approved detail your jurisdiction uses sets the drain, the backfill material and how water leaves the back of the wall.
Send those details with your plans. When the drainage, the steel and the wall dimensions are on paper, the bid reflects the wall you actually need to build.
Builders and Homeowners Across Metro Atlanta
Retaining walls can come up alongside other poured work. A builder cutting a basement into a hillside may need poured foundation walls and a wall to hold the yard, and a lot with a steep side may call for new footings as well.
JJC Concrete is based in Marietta and works across metro Atlanta, including Kennesaw, Acworth, Powder Springs and Douglasville. See the full commercial work list for basement walls and crawl space foundations.
How a Retaining Wall Bid Works
- 1
Send the plans
Share engineered drawings, the approved standard detail, or a site plan with wall heights and locations. When no plans exist yet, describe the slope and the rough height and length of the wall.
- 2
Review the site and scope
Access, grade, wall length and height, and the site work already done on your lot all shape the scope of the bid.
- 3
Receive the bid
The bid covers the wall work as drawn. Questions about permits and engineering go to your building department, and you can raise them with us on the call.
- 4
Form and set steel
With the footing trench open, aluminum forms go up and the steel goes in as the plans call for, with any inspection your jurisdiction requires scheduled before the pour.
- 5
Pour and strip
Concrete is placed in the forms, and once the forms come off the wall shows its smooth finish, ready for drainage and backfill per the design.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I send to get a bid on a retaining wall?
Send the engineered drawings or approved detail, a site plan showing wall heights and lengths, and the address. If the wall is still in the planning stage, a description of the slope with a rough measurement of the height and length helps us understand the job.
How much does a poured retaining wall cost?
The price depends on the wall height, length, footing size, steel, site work and access, so each job is bid on its own plans. Send the drawings or a description of the slope and request a bid, or call to talk through the project.
Do I need an engineer for my retaining wall?
It depends on your city or county and on the wall. Acworth's form requires a Georgia Registered Structural Engineer's sealed design for walls that support structures. Ask your building department what applies to your lot before you finalize the plans.
Do you pull permits for retaining walls?
Permit requirements are set by the city or county where the wall is built, and thresholds differ between jurisdictions. Ask about permits for your project when you call, and check with your local building department on what it requires for your wall.
Are you licensed and insured?
Yes. JJC Concrete is licensed and insured, and we have been pouring concrete walls across metro Atlanta since 2010. The company is family owned and based in Marietta, with family members working on the crew that forms and pours each wall.
Do you speak Spanish?
Yes. Hablamos español. Builders, crews and homeowners can talk through a retaining wall project and the bid in Spanish or in English, whichever is easier for everyone on the job, from the first look at the plans to the day the wall is poured.
