Mableton Is a City Now. What Changed for Permits?
Mableton voters approved cityhood in a referendum on November 8, 2022, by 13,162 votes to 11,675, and the first city council was elected in March 2023. The city says it now has authority over business licensing, building permits, inspections, zoning and planning, and code enforcement.
Cobb County still provides schools, police, fire, EMS, major roads, streetlights and animal services. For concrete work, that split means the city is the first stop for building permits inside Mableton city limits. A mailing address alone may not tell you whether a lot is inside those limits. If you are unsure which office covers your project, confirm with the city or the county before work begins.
How the City of Mableton Takes Permit Applications
The Building and Permitting Division administers the Georgia State minimum standard codes for buildings in the city. It says only files submitted through its online portal are accepted, and building permit applications go through Cloud Permit. Having drawings and a site plan ready in digital form makes that upload simpler for whoever files it.
The division's list of work that needs a permit includes new construction, additions, decks, porches, accessory structures over 200 square feet and retaining walls over 4 feet. Permit requirements are set by the city or county, so ask about permits for your own project when you call.

Projects That Started Before the Handover
The move from county to city services took time. In March 2025, the Marietta Daily Journal reported service agreements put before the Cobb County Board of Commissioners. Under them, the county would keep handling inspections, certificates of occupancy and final plat approval for applications that were already open, along with stormwater and fire marshal services, and the city could buy mapping services from the county for a year starting June 1.
If a lot or subdivision in Mableton was permitted during that transition, it is worth confirming with both the city and Cobb County which office holds the file today. Builders with older approvals should have that answer in hand before sending a bid request.
Retaining Walls, Slopes and Red Clay in Mableton
Mableton sits in the upper Piedmont of Cobb County, a region of rolling hills and narrow valleys, with the Chattahoochee River forming its border with Fulton County. On that kind of ground, a patio or a parking pad can need a wall to hold the grade, and the city's 4 foot line for retaining wall permits is a number to know early.
We pour concrete retaining walls in aluminum forms that leave a smooth finish. The red clay under Georgia lots gets its color from iron oxides and is prone to erosion once the ground cover is stripped, so mention any bare or recently cleared ground when you call.
For a homeowner, the useful starting point is how much grade the wall holds and what sits above it, such as a driveway, a patio or a yard. Bring the rough height and length of the wall and a note on what is above and below it. A wall near that 4 foot line is the one to raise with the city first.

Driveways, Patios and Walks for Mableton Homes
For homeowners, a new or replacement driveway includes tear out and haul off of the old concrete. A cracked walk, a sunken garage apron or a broken set of steps fits under concrete removal and replacement.
Out back, a concrete patio gives a solid place for chairs and a grill. Sidewalks and walkways, steps and stoops, garage floors and slabs are all on the list, and one conversation about a property can cover several of them.
If your driveway meets a street, tell us where it ties in and whether there is curb at the street. Those details, along with the lot size and the way the yard slopes, set up a realistic free estimate for Mableton flatwork.
Basement and Foundation Walls for Builders
Poured basement and foundation walls for builders and general contractors are the main work at JJC Concrete today. We pour basement walls, foundation walls, footings, crawl space foundations and subwalls, and we have poured walls as tall as 24 feet on past jobs.
The equipment on hand includes aluminum forms, lasers, excavators and bobcats. Builders working in the new city can request a bid with the plan set, wall heights and the permit status of the lot. With building files now living in the city's Cloud Permit portal, noting which office approved the lot keeps the paperwork question out of the way.
Around Mableton and Next Door
The city lists the Historic Mable House and the Mable House Barnes Amphitheatre among its destinations, and the Robert Mable House dates to 1843. The Silver Comet Trail runs through Mableton, and Veterans Memorial Highway and Floyd Road carry traffic across the city, which says it is home to nearly 80,000 residents.
JJC Concrete is based in Marietta and works across metro Atlanta. For jobs just outside the city, see our pages for Austell and Smyrna.

When did Mableton become a city?
Mableton voters approved cityhood on November 8, 2022, and the city describes itself as incorporated in November 2022. Since then the city has taken on building permits, inspections, zoning, planning and code enforcement.
Who issues building permits in Mableton?
The City of Mableton Building and Permitting Division issues building permits, and it accepts applications only through its Cloud Permit online portal. Does a retaining wall need a permit in Mableton?
The City of Mableton lists retaining walls over 4 feet among the work that needs a permit. Wall height and site conditions matter, so ask about permits for your specific wall when you call, and confirm the details with the city building division before the wall is designed or formed.
